Creating a Caring Culture
As a trusted health solutions partner, Medavie embraces diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) by fostering a respectful culture where our teams, patients, customers, partners and communities are valued for who they are and what they contribute.
Foster a culture of caring, openness and understanding where everyone feels included and inspired to be their best.
Be intentional and accountable in applying the principles of inclusion and embedding them at all levels of our organization.
Strengthen our connections to our inclusive culture and deepen our relationships with each other and those we serve.
We encourage and empower diverse voices knowing that varied perspectives fuel collaboration, innovation and excellence that is central to our mission of improving the wellbeing of Canadians.
“After spending a number of years as a frontline healthcare provider and educator it is clear to me just how important it is to have a workforce that represents, understands, and respects the diverse communities in which we serve. As a member of the Medavie DEI Council, I’m thrilled to be able to help our organization have a positive impact in these areas.”

“I came out as genderqueer at Medavie over the summer of 2022 and the support that I received was incredible. Within days my email account and other identifying information that could be changed was changed. I rarely experience a situation where I am deadnamed or referred to by the wrong pronouns. And now that Medavie covers gender affirmation surgery as a benefit, I can look forward to my future with confidence and a feeling of security in my person.”

“Medavie was the first employer that made me feel comfortable with my individuality. Here, I had mentors and team members who gave me the confidence and push to grow my career.”

“When I immigrated to Canada, I prayed to find employment with a company where my contributions and ideas are valued, where I have a sense of inclusion, and a good work-life balance. The answer came as Medavie Blue Cross.”

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Action
Leading the Way
Our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategy is led by our Director, DEI and supported by our DEI Council. Comprised of diverse thought leaders and influencers from across Canada, our council is passionate about DEI and dedicated to ensuring that Medavie is continuously progressing towards a more inclusive environment.
We ensure we use inclusive language and imagery in everything we say and do, from our correspondence with members and communiques with clients to our marketing materials, social media posts and online content. We also offer members inclusive choices on our forms.
As part of our ongoing efforts to support a diverse Canadian workforce, we continue to expand our benefits offering with inclusive options, including our Gender Affirmation Benefit, which supports gender-diverse plan members in their gender transition.
As a not-for-profit organization, we partner with health-focused, community-based diverse and inclusive organizations to support initiatives that share our goals of fairness and equality and who work to remove barriers to care.
We connect intention with impact by driving inclusive behaviours at all levels of leadership across the organization including training to help leaders understand and manage unconscious biases and inclusive leadership.
